Seagull Scientific Introduces Commander in BarTender
Upgrade
BELLEVUE, WA, USA—November 13, 2000—Seagull Scientific has announced the release
of version 6.1 of its BarTender label software. The release includes CommanderTM,
a new enterprise software integration tool that expands upon technology Seagull
originally developed for the DataDetector utility previously distributed with
BarTender. While Commander's primary focus continues to be the integration of
label printing into the various hardware and database platforms found in
enterprise environments, Seagull says that Commander can handle more general
integration functions as well.
"Our original product, DataDetector, was designed to be as flexible as
possible," says Don Ray, President of Seagull Scientific, "but it still
surprised us when we actually found customers using it to also control
non-labeling functions. This sparked a lot of interest here at Seagull so, with
a major upgrade already planned, we opted for a more extensive redesign that
includes numerous advanced features, such as multi-threaded print job
processing. We've named the new product "Commander" because it better reflects
its ability to control a larger variety of applications."
The Commander software utility, according to Seagull, greatly simplifies the
task of getting two or more applications to work cooperatively, even though
they may not have been designed to work together. Commander does this by
waiting for certain data or commands to be output by a "source"
application and then initiating a custom response in one or more "target"
applications. For example, if Commander sees a data file generated from a
manufacturing program, it could respond by launching a BarTender job for box
labels, a job for a pallet label, and additionally signaling an EDI application
to create an advance shipping notice.
Although Commander is Windows-based, Seagull says that it can monitor output
from most applications and platforms, as long as they are "visible" on the
network. And, according to Seagull, Commander can simultaneously monitor
multiple sources and events and initiate responses in multiple applications on
different computers. For more information visit www.BarTenderBarcodeSoftware.com
